Are you interested in learning the skills required to perform laparoscopic surgery in companion animals? If so, our Small Animal Laparoscopic Surgery Course is the perfect course for you. This course will consist of a one-day Zoom theory session followed by a one day wet-lab (cadaver) practical session. There will be a full laparoscopy station and cadaver for every two delegates.

The remote theory session will be taking place on Friday 24th September 2021 and the practical session on 25th September from 9am - 5pm.

 

Tim Charlesworth
MA VetMB CertSAS DSAS(ST) MRCVS

This course will be run by Tim Charlesworth. Tim Charlesworth is an RCVS recognised specialist in small animal (soft tissue) surgery based at Eastcott Referrals in Swindon. Tim gained the RCVS diploma in 2012, is a committee member of the association of veterinary soft tissue surgeons (AVSTS) and is a current examiner for the RCVS certificate in advanced veterinary practice (Cert AVP).

Tim is one of only a handful of UK vets who has been performing laparoscopy/thoracoscopy for over 10 years and has extensive experience in this field. Tim has lectured both nationally and internationally on this topic and regularly helps train vets in this increasingly popular field.

 

Course Content

• Equipment – selection, cleaning and maintenance
• Anaesthesia for routine and emergency laparoscopy
• Diathermy and Vessel Sealers – available options
• Establishing pneumoperitoneum – controversies about how to get started.
• Biopsy techniques – liver, pancreas, kidney
• Neutering – ovariectomy, ovariohysterectomy
• Laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy

 

Course Programme
Friday 24 September:Laparoscopic theory session via Zoom - 12.30pm – 4.30pm

Saturday 25 September:Practical Session (8 delegates)

1. Dry-lab simulations
2. Coffee break
3. Insufflation techniques/port placements 
4. Lap-OE/OHE 
5. Lunch
6. Lap-assisted Gastropexy
7. Liver Biopsy, cholecystocentesis
8. Afternoon break & assessment
9. Advanced procedures

Sunday 26 September:Practical session. Repeat of 25 September (8 Delegates)

 

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, it is expected that delegates will be confident in the basics of laparoscopic surgery and to perform the outlined surgical techniques.
